Some technology can have disastrous long-term consequences, especially when developed for war or as a spin-off from weaponry. One example, nuclear power, has proven to be dangerous and not well understood by the public. The world is now dealing with some of its lethal manifestations in Fukushima Japan. That disaster is now over six months old. The power plant says they may have the fires in the reactors out by January of 2012, but there is no cleanup plan for the contaminated earth or resettlement of 200,000 evacuated people. In eight weeks fallout from the disaster reached the northwestern coast of the U.S., and CounterPunch reported significant fallout in Portland, Tacoma, Seattle and Spokane. Wind carries the fallout around the world and rain brings it down wherever it falls.
Nuclear is something we know about, but another example of a dangerous technology that has drawn very little public attention is the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), a joint project of the United States Air Force and Navy in Alaska. Based on the theories of physicist Nicola Tesla, it is designed to study the ionosphere in order to develop weapons technology. The program is referred to as a "Star Wars" weapon and is intended to provide a shield against incoming missiles.
The book Angels Don't Play this HAARP, by Dr. Nick Begich and Jeanne Manning, records the little-known world of Tesla's experimentation. It's slow reading even for someone with some science background, but the authors make a difficult subject understandable, interesting and frightening. In 1924 Tesla established that radio waves bounce off the ionosphere, the electrically charged atmospheric layer 50 kilometers above the earth. He proposed to manipulate this layer.
The timeline in the book lists discoveries, experiments and results. All of the testing humans have done, rockets we have fired, satellites we have launched, etc., are modifying a delicate system. The military has a tight leash on information and a big budget. One strategy is bouncing electricity off of the ionosphere to earth at a targeted location for destruction. Electric vibrations can be varied to interfere with the natural vibrations of living tissue for human control. It sounds very Star Wars-ish, but we should have a better understanding of what we are funding.
